Community Resilience in Guatemala

Asociación Chajulense Va’l Vaq Quyol is one of the worker-owned co-ops supported by Equal Exchange, they empower over 3,000 families in San Gaspar Chajul, Guatemala. Founded during the civil war, it began by meeting basic needs—building a pharmacy, granary, and store. With support from Mexico’s UCIRI co-op, it shifted to organic, fair-trade coffee. Despite challenges like coffee leaf rust, the association thrives, driving economic growth and sustainability in the region.
